AtmosFX: The Content That Makes It Work

The projector is the hardware. AtmosFX is the content that makes it worth buying. They sell Halloween scenes (ghosts, zombies, jack-o-lanterns, witches) designed specifically for holiday projection, as downloads or on USB. The files play from a laptop, streaming stick, or media player connected by HDMI, or directly on a projector that reads video files from USB. Not every USB port does: Epson describes the HC 980’s USB port as “a power source for streaming devices,” and Optoma’s HD146X and GT1080HDR list a “USB-A power” port.

Projection Surfaces

Window projection is the most popular approach. You can project from inside the house onto a window, or use a rear-projection screen hung behind the glass. The rear-projection method looks cleaner because the glass does not create a double image.

For rear projection, you need white spandex fabric, a frosted shower curtain, or a purpose-made projection screen stretched tight inside the window frame. Wrinkles destroy the effect, so tension matters.

Garage door projection works with front projection (projector outside, aimed at the door). The white surface of most garage doors is a surprisingly good screen. Place the projector low and back, angled up slightly to fill the door.

Wall projection is best for outdoor party spaces. Project onto a flat white wall, a hung bedsheet, or a purpose-built screen. This works for outdoor movie nights with horror films, too.

Placement for Maximum Effect

Distance matters. Every projector has a throw ratio, and image width is the distance divided by that ratio. For a picture 5 ft wide on a window, a standard-throw projector around 1.2 sits about 6 ft back, and a 0.49 short-throw about 2.5 ft. For a 20-ft-wide picture across a house front, the Epson above needs 24 to 29 ft, and a 0.49 short-throw needs 9.8 ft.

Measure your space before you buy. The maker’s spec sheet lists the throw ratio and the range of distances it supports. The full arithmetic, including how many lumens a facade needs, is in our whole-house projection guide.

Hide the projector. A visible projector on a table breaks the illusion completely. Place it on the floor behind furniture (for indoor window projection), or outside under cover in an enclosure that is both rainproof and ventilated. Don’t seal it in a tote: Nebula’s manual says never to put the Capsule 3 “in a confined space,” Epson says to leave “plenty of space around and under the projector for ventilation,” and AtmosFX says outdoor use voids the warranty on most projectors.
