Every guide to murder mystery parties is a list of kits, written by somebody who sells kits. They will tell you the themes and the price. They will not tell you the thing that decides whether the night works.
Here it is. Most murder mystery kits are written for an exact number of players, and someone always cancels.
You bought a game for eight. On the day, two people drop out. Now you have six guests, two unplayed characters holding clues nobody will ever reveal, and a mystery that cannot be solved because the murderer might be one of the people who did not come. Hosts discover this at 7pm with a house full of guests.
Everything else in this guide is secondary to that.
Fixed Cast Or Flexible Cast
There are two designs on the market and the distinction is rarely on the front of the box.
Fixed cast. The game is written for a specific headcount. Every character holds specific clues, and the solution depends on all of them being in the room. These are usually the better-written mysteries, because the author knew exactly who was present. They are also brittle.
Flexible cast. The game supports a range of players, and critically, the murderer is determined on the night rather than baked into the script. Guests can drop out without breaking anything.
If your guest list is friends who confirm and then get sick, travel, or forget, buy flexible. The writing is slightly looser and the evening actually happens.

You do not have to buy anything. A murder mystery is a structure, not a product, and running your own gives you something no kit can: characters based on your actual friends.
What you need is a victim, six to eight suspects each with a motive and a secret, a timeline of the evening, and a set of clues that points to one of them. Our murder mystery character sheets are free and give you the character framework, so you are writing the mystery rather than the paperwork.
The honest tradeoff: writing a solvable mystery is genuinely hard. Clues have to be findable but not obvious, and every suspect needs a plausible motive. Budget three or four hours to write it properly. If that sounds like a project rather than a pleasure, buy the kit.
A middle path that works well: buy a kit for the mystery structure and replace the character names and backstories with your own guests’ running jokes. You keep the solvable plot and gain the personalization.
Running The Night
The failure mode of these parties is not the mystery. It is the pacing.
- Send characters a week ahead. Guests need time to think about a costume and read their booklet. A character revealed at the door gets played badly.
- Feed people first. Twenty minutes of eating and drinking before anything starts. People will not act in character while hungry and sober.
- Round one, introductions. Everyone states who they are and their relation to the victim. This is where the evening either takes off or dies, so go first yourself and commit hard to the accent.
- Break for food between rounds. The board or the buffet is doing real work here, giving people a reason to circulate and interrogate each other.
- Round two, accusations. Clues come out, alibis break.
- The reveal, and keep it short. Announce, explain in about two minutes, and stop. A long explanation after the answer is where the energy goes.
Two and a half to three hours is the right length, including food. Kits that claim four hours are counting the meal generously.

Kits are reusable in the sense that you can host the same mystery for a different group next year, but not for the same guests, since they now know the answer. Factor that in if you host the same crowd every October.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many people do I need? Six is the practical minimum for the interrogation to have anywhere to go. Eight to ten is the sweet spot. Past fourteen you want an app-assisted kit.
What happens if someone cancels? With a flexible-cast game, nothing. With a fixed-cast game you either recruit a replacement or reassign that character’s clues to another player, which usually means reading ahead and spoiling it for yourself.
Do guests have to dress up? It works far better if they do, and Halloween is the one night nobody needs persuading. Send the character brief early enough that costumes are possible.
Can the host play? In most kits, no, because you read the solution while preparing. Some are explicitly designed so the host is also a suspect, and if you are hosting your own party that feature is worth paying for.
How long does it actually take? Two and a half to three hours including food. Add half an hour if your group enjoys the interrogation, which they will if the first round goes well.
Is it too complicated for a big Halloween party? Yes, if the party is a drop-in with people arriving across the evening. A murder mystery needs a fixed guest list who arrive together and stay. For an open house, run a costume contest instead.
